US will be ‘worried about its own position and challenges’ for climate target

Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says the US will be focusing on “their own position and challenges” in relations to climate targets, as will Australia.

Australia will reject a push from the US to up its methane emission cut to 30 per cent by 2030 at the Glasgow COP26 Climate Change Conference next week.

“My guess is the US is going to be worried about its own position and own challenges, as will Australia,” Mr Flake told Sky News Australia.

“You’re not going to see economic implications; really, the challenge for Australia is the same for the United States, it is answering to future generations; it’s answering to public expectations on these issues.

“It’s not so much a diplomatic issue on that front.”
