Ted Cruz hits out at Big Bird vaccination ‘propaganda’

Sesame Street favourite Big Bird has caused a stir with Texas Senator Ted Cruz after he confirmed he had received the COVID-19 vaccination.

While the Sesame Street favourite has been entertaining children since 1969, his character is only six-years-old, meaning he became eligible for the vaccine at the end of last month after the US Food and Drug Administration authorised the Pfizer jab for children aged five to 11.

He appeared on CNN’s The ABCs of COVID Vaccines yesterday with journalist Erica Hill and his grandmother, Granny Bird, revealed Big Bird would be receiving the vaccine.

Overnight, Big Bird tweeted he had received the vaccine, with the majority of the nearly 15,000 comments on the tweet being supportive.

“I got the COVID-19 vaccine today! My wing is feeling a little sore, but it’ll give my body an extra protective boost that keeps me and others healthy,” the tweet read.

“Ms. @EricaRHill even said I’ve been getting vaccines since I was a little bird. I had no idea!”

But while most people on the social media platform understood the important health message the character was trying to deliver, congressman Ted Cruz has called the tweet “government propaganda”.

“Government propaganda… for your 5-year-old!” Senator Cruz commented on a retweet.

Senator Cruz’ reaction to Big Bird’s tweet has since received international attention, with celebrities, and multiple news agencies commenting on it.

The Texan representative has long been opposed to children receiving the vaccine, introducing legislation last week which would prohibit any government agency in the US from imposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates on children.

“Parents should have the right to decide what is best for their children in consultation with their family doctor,” Mr Cruz said in a statement announcing the legislation.

“My view on the COVID-19 vaccine has remained clear: no mandates of any kind.”
