A Northern Territory police officer has found himself on the opposite side of the law after he was charged with child abuse offences.

The 34-year-old was arrested and remanded in custody to appear in the Alice Springs Local Court on Monday over his alleged offending.

He is facing three counts of possessing child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service, three counts of using a carriage service to transmit child abuse material and two counts of using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material.

The officer was also charged with one count of using a carriage service to groom another person to make it easier to procure persons under 16 years of age.

A NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said the matter was still being investigated by the Professional Standards Command.

“As the matter is now before the courts, no further information will be provided,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
