Man in critical condition after being hit by car in Palmerston North

A man is in critical condition after being allegedly hit by a car outside a petrol station in Palmerston North on Thursday night.

A police media spokesman said a person was found lying on the road outside the Z service station on Pioneer Highway at 9.15pm.

The driver of the car stopped immediately to help.

After police arrived they took the car away for an examination, as part of the ongoing investigation into what had happened.

A St John ambulance spokeswoman said one person was transported to Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition.

A MidCentral District Health Board media spokesman said the patient had been transferred to Wellington Hospital on Friday morning.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said firefighters had attended a call-out for a car versus pedestrian and assisted paramedics onsite with first aid for one male patient.
