Police and paramedics called to the Mayfield home about 10.40pm on Friday tried to save the 21-year-old woman but she died at the scene.
Officers arrested a 22-year-old man, who was taken to hospital for treatment for a hand injury.
On Sunday, police charged him with murder, entering a dwelling with intent and breaching an apprehended domestic violence order.
He is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Monday after being refused bail.
