Police have charged Prabhal “Raj” Sharma, 40, with two counts of murder following the incident at a home on Kellaway Crescent in Mill Park on January 13.
A neighbour called emergency services to the house about 7.50pm, where police found Mr Sharma’s wife, 39-year-old Poonam Sharma, with stab wounds.
Police then came across Mr Sharma, who allegedly “proceeded to injure himself” after speaking to officers.
He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital.
The couple’s six-year-old daughter Vanessa was found critically injured inside the home before she died at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Their other child, a 10-year-old girl, fled the house during the incident and avoided injury.
Almost two weeks afterwards, Mr Sharma remains in hospital under police guard.
He will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a date which has not yet been set.
It is understood emergency services were called to the home to perform a psychiatric assessment on someone in the hours before the attack.
