Hubble Telescope captures eerie image of dying star

Astronomers have released a new map of the outermost region of our galaxy.

The galactic halo region lies outside the swirling spiral arms that make up the Milky Way’s recognisable central disk, and is sparsely populated with stars.

The halo is predicted to contain a massive reservoir of dark matter – an invisible substance thought to make up the bulk of all mass in the universe.

The all-star map reveals how a satellite galaxy, called the Large Magellanic Cloud, has sailed through the galactic halo.

Like a ship through water, its gravity is creating a wake of stars behind it.

While previous studies have hinted at the wake’s existence, the new map confirms its presence.

Astronomers believe the disturbance in the halo could offer a new test of dark matter theories.
