Boris Johnson’s resignation still a ‘long way away’

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s potential resignation is still a “long way away,” according to the Australian British Chamber of Commerce’s CEO David McCredie.

Mr Johnson has come under fire in recent weeks for a series of parties held at Number 10 Downing Street during the height of the country’s lockdown measures.

A leadership spill would be triggered if 54 Conservative MPs write into the influential 1922 Committee, which oversees leadership contests within the party.

“We’re still a long way away from that happening, it would seem, at this point in time,” Mr McCredie said.

“There’s a report that’s going to come out which will look into the activities at No 10 over that period, it’s being put together at the moment.

“Obviously, if that’s a damning indictment of the leadership of the Prime Minister and enough Tory backbenchers feel that a change is needed then that may precipitate that leadership spill.”

Mr Johnson has been nicknamed ‘Teflon Boris’ due to his ability to dodge “many things that would have proved fatal to other careers,” however the fallout from ‘Partygate’ might prove too great for the British prime minister, as public anger reaches an all-time high.
