Florida hired yet another coach with a color in his last name Friday when it selected former San Francisco head coach Todd Golden to replace former coach Mike White. Golden leaves the Dons after he led them to the NCAA Tournament with a 24-10 record but fell in overtime during the opening round to Murray State, 92-87. Just like with White’s stunning announcement to leave for Georgia, there were plenty of great Twitter reactions to the news.
Overall, the reactions discovered were mixed. Some Florida fans were frustrated athletic director Scott Stricklin went with another up-and-coming mid-major coach over a more established name while others were willing to give him a chance.
In his last three seasons at the helm, San Francisco compiled a meh 57-36 record while leading the program to its first March Madness berth since 1998 this season. However, the Dons played in the West Coast Conference with the likes of constant NCAA fixtures Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s. The Alligator’s Caleb Wiegandt found a solid nugget that 13 of his 36 losses came to WCC powerhouses Bulldogs and Gaels.
Before San Francisco, he spent time as an assistant from 2014-2016 under coach Bruce Pearl.
Now here are the best Twitter reactions to Golden’s hire that Gators Wire found.
Todd Golden is young, confident and checks all the boxes ADs are looking for. Built a program at a difficult place to do it. Analytically savvy. Has recruited everywhere.
Is it a gamble at a plum job like Florida? Yes. But he has the chance to be one of the game’s biggest stars.

At first, I didn’t know who Golden was when the news started churning out Friday. However, after I did my homework, I agree with Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney. It’s a high-risk, high-reward hire.
I get strong Evan McPherson look-alike vibes from new #Gators coach Todd Golden.
Wonder how many buzzer-beaters he’ll be good for in his rookie season at Florida. pic.twitter.com/W1DViPeOcS

Speaking of looking alike, former kicker Evan McPherson and Golden could really be related.

Gators fans can definitely be spoiled, but Stricklin should’ve at least tried to allure a more established name after Florida didn’t have to pay any of White’s buyout. It’s also difficult to watch West Coast Conference games because it’s a smaller conference and on the other side of the country.
This dude’s like 15 years old https://t.co/FfXh6rMNeO

I’d agree that he looks closer to his 20s than his 30s. He’s currently 36 years old.
