AGL demerger plan was ‘problematic right from the start’

Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood says AGL’s proposed demerger plan was “problematic right from the start”.

The company announced on Monday morning it had abandoned plans which would have seen the company’s coal and renewable energy sectors demerged.

Mr Greenwood said the reason the company wanted to split into two was because it is Australia’s “largest coal-fired power generator”.

“And so it effectively wanted to put those assets into one company, and keep many of its, shall I say, friendlier – eco-friendlier assets, and its retail arm, into a separate business which was to be called AGL Australia,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
