Lotto’s second-largest prize ever has been won.

A single player has won a $42.2 million prize from Wednesday night’s Lotto draw, with a ticket from Countdown Pōkeno.

Wednesday night’s numbers were: 2, 3, 4, 7, 19, 31.

The bonus ball is 8 and the Powerball is 9.

“Tonight’s $42.2 million Powerball win is the second-largest prize ever won in New Zealand – there’s no denying that it’s a life-changing win,” Lotto’s senior corporate communications manager Kirsten Robinson said in a statement on Wednesday night.

There were some issues with MyLotto on Wednesday night, “due to the very large number of customers accessing the platform all at the same time”, Robinson said.

“While the MyLotto app and the website were still processing tickets up until the time sales for the draw closed, some customers did have a degraded experience, and we would like to apologise to those customers – it is certainly not the experience we wish to provide.”

The issues came as Lotto NZ saw ticket sales “an order of magnitude higher than what we would expect for an average Wednesday night draw”.

“The number of customers going online was exacerbated by Auckland and parts of the Waikato being under Alert Level 3 restrictions, meaning some stores are still closed. During high jackpots we always encourage players to buy their tickets early to avoid our busiest times,” Robinson said.

More details about the issues would be made available on Thursday.

Wednesday night’s other winners

Another four winners have nabbed $200,000 each in the Lotto first division draw, from Whangaparoa, Drury, New Plymouth and Christchurch.

Seven strike players will be taking home $142,857. One MyLotto in Auckland sold two winning lucky strike tickets.

The biggest Powerball Lotto win in New Zealand history was $44m back in November 2016.

A couple from the Hibiscus Coast who had young children claimed the prize. At the time they said they had been struggling to get on the property ladder.

Their lucky ticket was bought from Auckland’s Dairy Flat Foodmart and Liquor.

In February last year, Lotto Powerball rose to $50m and was a ‘must be won’ draw. This was split by two players who each took home $25m.
